Why People Shy Away (and What You Can Do About It)

To know what makes people shy away, you must put yourself in their shoes. Placing yourself in their position will give you visualized thoughts. Three probable reasons are written below.

One reason why people go way is that they are bored. Boredom sets in between two people mainly because of dissimilar interests. To escape boredom, find common grounds of interests. The solution is to change your interest – if you can do this. If this is not possible, find somebody that has similar interest as yours.

There are people who are open to other subject matters they are not familiar with, or they thought they are not interested in. But once they touch on the subject, they find that it is actually interesting for them. You might be one of these people. Give unfamiliar subjects the chance to enter your world. You have everything to gain from them. Life is a never-ending process of learning something new. This is one way (probably the only way) to progress intellectually. Adopt the principle of knowing a little of everything. Given the chance, you will know more of these things gradually.

The second reason is the self-serving human nature. If you make this aspect prevail over other intentions, you have to change it. If you don’t let self-interest prevail, congratulations! You have a good positive foundation.

People can see through self-serving intentions. It’s the reason why people shy away. Let the other person’s interest prevail over yours, so that bonding can ensue. This makes relationships stay for a long time, perhaps even for a lifetime

It cannot be discounted that some people mask their self-serving intentions. It is not meant to arouse suspicion or make you think suspiciously of other people. It is intended to awaken in you an alert mind so that a situation like this can be avoided or prevented. Let us be realistic. These things exist. Do not be suspicious. Nobody likes to be subjects of suspicion. Just be objective and open-minded.

The third reason is probably your own unique way of treating people. You don’t know what they are thinking about, although you can speculate. However, you know for sure what you are thinking about and what you know you can control, change, or improve. Ask or check yourself if you have made them feel dominated by you. Do you complain a lot? Do you criticize? Have you been disrespectful of other people’s opinion? Do you argue? Do you give importance to other people’s interests? Have you shown appreciation for favors given to you? Do you always insist you are right and they are wrong?

These kinds of questions can go on without end, but it must boil down to one answer. If you want other people to stay with you, you must show genuine appreciation to the other person’s character just as you would show sincere importance to your own. Give in, if you must, without compromising friendship. Let mutual benefits overshadow pride.

It’s easier to keep friendship by giving in, than to win back friendship that has been lost. Saying sorry later may be noble, but it needs not be the order of the day.

When people shy away, everybody stands to lose. So why allow it?

Factors That Can Make or Break Your Business

Several reasons can make a business. Some of these reasons may be subtle and superficial; but in spite of their seemingly harmless effects, they can make your business prosper even without spending a single cent.

On the other hand, some factors can break your business, so much so that spending a fortune might not help to make your business recover.

Just what are these factors? Obviously, they have something to do with the people running your business. If you are running your business yourself, your entire business structure depends on you.

Do you have to be good looking? Good looking is not a prerequisite, although looking good is. Neatness and personal hygiene are external qualities that people in business and shop tenders should possess since they are the first lines of attraction. But more than just being physically presentable, there is a much more important attraction required in shops – a smile on each and everyone’s face, regardless of position. A smile invites customers. Accompany the smile with a “hello” and other words that have semblance to it. By doing this, you will gain the momentum of a possible sale.

Be prompt. People value time. Time cannot be recovered nor earned, so make the most out of it. It is particularly important that customers should not wait for long. Let’s say you have to go to the warehouse to get the stock needed by a customer. Make the waiting time as short as possible. If waiting is going to require considerable time, let the customer know so. Waiting can cut down sales; so if this frequently happens in your shop, find ways to curb or cut it down. This is especially true in shops with long queues. The only solution is to add more cashiers, especially during peak hours.

Be attentive. People would appreciate a direct answer to their questions, rather than going around the questions. Mix your answers with kind and helpful words, but don’t lose focus on the questions. They help to make the conversation pleasant.

Be interested in what prospective customers have to say. They may have a suggestion or two that you may find helpful. Leaving your option open to suggestions makes them feel welcome. You may not strike a deal or make a sale now, but you may be able to do so when the same customers return for a second visit with their suggestion in effect. Never reject a suggestion when presented to you. Even if you know it won’t work because you’ve tried it before, accept it with the condition that you’ll look into it seriously.

The next instance is a frequently asked question from prospective customers. Say you own a hardware store and a customer walks in looking for a particular item that you do not carry. After telling the customer that you don’t have it on stock, the next most likely question is if you know any store that carries it. A “no” answer may not hurt your business; but if you know or have a suggestion (which is about equivalent to a “yes” answer), it can help your business. How is this so? Because you took the time to help the customer possibly locate the item he is looking for, he becomes appreciative of your gesture. The next time he needs something from a hardware store, you will be the first one on his mind. It would also help to consider having an inventory of the items that customers are often looking for.

Remember, little details can perk up a business to succeed. Alternatively, their absence can break the business instead.

Deceptive Website Legal Forms Result in $359 million FTC Settlement

In a recent settlement, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) made it clear that deceptive website legal forms, particularly those that support “free” offers, will not be tolerated.

According to the FTC, the deceptive marketing schemes employed by the defendants netted over $450 million in sales. The result – the FTC came down hard on the defendants, with one individual defendant giving up all the money in his bank accounts, his house, automobile, and other personal property.

The takeaways from this settlement provide clear guidelines for all Internet marketers, particularly those who with sites that use “Free” offers as a lure for upsells to provide recurring revenue, or so-called “continuity” websites.

The Marketing Schemes
The offers were for products with broad market appeal, including weight-loss pills, teeth whiteners, health supplements, work-at-home options, access to government grants, free credit reports, and penny auctions.

A key factor in the marketing scheme was the lure of “free” offers, including “free” trials. Consumers were often charged a monthly fee, typically $79.95, plus additional monthly recurring fees for “bonus” offers and upsells.

Another key factor in the marketing scheme was significant leverage through affiliates – who drove traffic to the websites with the offers through widespread use of banner ads, pay-per-click ads, pop-ups, and unsolicited email. Affiliates were paid commissions for the sales resulting from traffic sent to the offering websites.

The Devil Is In The Details
Neither of the above key factors in the marketing scheme are per se illegal. The problem, according to the FTC, is in the details of how the defendants used the key factors to deceive consumers in violation of the FTC Act.

The following checklist summarizes the deceptive elements alleged by the FTC.

* Misrepresentations About “Free”, “Risk-Free”, and “Bonus”. The primary lures for consumers were the “Free” offers. The defendants induced consumers to provide their credit or debit card information by falsely promising that the product or service could be acquired on a “free” or “risk-free” trial basis while only paying a nominal shipping and handling fee. Some offers represented that the consumer would receive a product or service as a “bonus” for simply signing up. In fact, consumers were charged for products or services that they didn’t know about or had not agreed to purchase, and in some cases the charges were recurring on a monthly basis. The process for cancelling these charges or obtaining refunds involved separate time-consuming phone calls and other steps designed to significantly increase difficulty.

* Failure to Disclose, or Deceptive Disclosure of, Additional Charges. Despite the “free” offers, there were additional charges. In some cases there was no disclosure of additional charges. In many cases, there were disclosures regarding the additional charges, but the disclosures were not in a clear and understandable manner. Additional terms were buried in a separate “terms and conditions” page loaded with “lengthy, legalistic fine print” that was not accessible from the ordering page. Consumers were not required to click on an “I Agree” button to indicate acceptance with the “terms and conditions” page.

* Deceptive Refund Policies. Another significant lure for consumers were generous refund offers. Promises included “100% Satisfaction Guarantee”, “Risk Free Guarantee”, and “Easy Money Back Guarantee… Just Follow the 3 Easy Steps”. In fact, refund requests were denied, of if promised, they were never issued. In many cases consumers had to resort to complaints to law enforcement or the Better Business Bureau to actually get a refund.

* Failure to Disclose, or Deceptive Disclosure of, Limitations on Cancellations and Refunds. Despite the refund offers, there were limitations on cancellations and refunds which were either not disclosed or not adequately disclosed.

* False and Unsubstantiated Efficacy Claims. The defendants did not possess or rely upon a reasonable basis to substantiate their advertising claims on banner ads approved by the defendants for use by affiliate marketers.

* False Celebrity and Other Endorsements. The defendants displayed images of celebrities on their websites without permission and falsely represented that these celebrities endorsed the defendants’ products. In addition, logos for prominent news entities were displayed with statements such as “Featured On” and “As Seen On TV”, when in fact none of these entities endorsed or positively reported on any of the products.

* Evading Risk Management Rules to Obtain Merchant Accounts. The defendants submitted inaccurate financial information to merchant banks in order to retain or obtain merchant credit card processing accounts.

The Settlement
The settlement included substantial payments by the defendants from the sale of business and personal assets. In addition, the defendants’ were enjoined for future violations of the deceptive practices discussed above.

Finally, regarding their affiliates, the defendants were ordered:

* to disclose to all affiliates that engaging in deceptive practices would result in immediate termination, an

* to monitor affiliate activities monthly for violations.

Conclusion – Important Settlement Takeaways
Most of the takeaways from this settlement are obvious egregious violations. However, there are three takeaways that are perhaps no so obvious, but which are significant for Internet marketers:

* reliance on disclosures or disclaimers in website legal documents alone is not enough to avoid liability; in this case there were disclosures regarding additional charges and refunds limitations, but they were buried in the “fine print”, and therefore, they were not clearly and conspicuously disclosed in order to avoid consumer deception;

* even if disclosures are clearly and conspicuously disclosed, using “Free” offers as a lure for upsells, particularly if the upsells involve recurring revenue (continuity plans), will always be a red flag issue, and therefore, attract close scrutiny by the FTC; and

* using affiliates to advertise and drive traffic for sales does not absolve an Internet marketer merchant from liability for the affiliates’ deceptive practices; monitoring of affiliate marketing practices and termination of offending affiliates is required.

What You Think Will Make You

Most people buy an appliance, like a television, with no particular features or brand in mind. Others look for some simple features because they have to fit the television with other existing appliances they have at home. Some people look for special features to satisfy their sophisticated needs.

A few prefer to buy things custom-made, like motorcycles. Some people buy rare things such as collector items.

In each category, the choice becomes more definite, more particular, and rarer. The rarer they are, the more priceless they become.

As you can see, life offers many choices. This includes the choice on how you want yourself to be. Would you prefer to be anybody or would you rather be somebody? I’m not talking about being just somebody, but a rare somebody.

To accomplish this, your way of thinking matters a lot. Your pocket need not be full of cash, because money is not going to help you to become a rare you. Your fame is not going to be the basis of becoming a rare you either. Only the way you perceive things, and the way you make your mind work, will determine the rare you.

To set your mind according to your design, you have to start by clearing it. Take off all unneeded, unwanted, obstructing materials that tend to feed negative forces on your mind. Fear keeps holding you back, which deprives you of your opportunity to go for your goal. Doubts make you indecisive. Lack of confidence in yourself makes you think you might fail. If you have time to deal with negative thinking, surely you also have time to think positively. Try to take calculated risks. Be firm in your decisions so that you’ll move forward. Believe in yourself because if you don’t, nobody else will.

If you let negative thinking dominate you, you already lose even before you begin to aim for your goal. If you let positive forces dominate you, the wheel of progress shall roll continuously.

Custom-made motorcycles are assembled according to the likes of the owner. You can do the same to your way of thinking. Custom design your way of thinking so that you will become a unique person. People buy or order custom-made motorcycles for the same reason – so that they can own a one of a kind vehicle. Make yourself one of a kind.

Some people aim for excellence; you should be no exception. They aim for excellence because they want to and not because they have special talents. There is no prerequisite to qualify in aiming for excellence. On second thought, there is a prerequisite. You have to have a master’s degree. You have to be the master of your own thought, to think positively and not to be a slave to negative thinking.

Just like a vintage car wherein all the parts must remain original, the way you think should also be directed to the fulfillment of your goal. Positive thoughts are similar to the original parts of a vintage car. Any replacement part that doesn’t conform to its originality ruins the value of the car. Similarly, you’re born with thoughts that lean to the positive. Any kind of negative thinking will ruin your essence. The way you think can make you who you want to be.
